While in law school, Lisa was selected to participate in a policy-based externship in Cape Town, South Africa just after Apartheid was abolished.  She worked full time for two organizations - the Human Rights Committee (HRC) a non-governmental organization striving to sustain and develop democracy in South Africa and the Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG).  She was responsible for tracking highly contentious bills in the legislature and providing detailed reports on Parliamentary committee meetings, which she relayed at legislative meetings and that were also posted on the PMG website.  Areas of focus included Open Democracy legislation, super-maximum security prisons, freedom of information, HIV/AIDS, and crime prevention.
